Welcome to the 2017-2018 Inner Wheel year. It has been exciting visiting your districts and meeting Inner Wheel members throughout the country. My visits have taken me to Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Twizel. District NZ298 had their assembly in Twizel, a very different location but one which was well supported and the difference made for a very special meeting.
Our clubs are making a difference to men, women and children throughout the country with our generous donations and offers of help to a variety of organisations. This is also happening in other parts of the world and we are very privileged to have the opportunity to belong to an International Organization with such strong links. We are celebrating our 94th year and our 50th year of the formation of Inner Wheel worldwide. Napier is celebrating its 81st year and many clubs have been going for over 30 years. We are represented at the United Nations in Geneva, New York and Vienna. New Zealand has had a strong representation on the International Board for many years and we continue to develop relationships with Australian representative through IWANZ. One of my Inner Wheel highlights was to attend the International Inner Wheel convention in Copenhagen in 2015 and New Zealand will have many members attending the International convention in Melbourne in April 2018.
Membership continues to be a challenge and in the last half of this year we have lost three clubs who feel they are unable to continue because it has not been possible to fill all the roles required for a club to function according to the constitution and objectives of Inner Wheel. There are several spaces in the national Directory for clubs in all districts. Your club needs you to just say “Yes, I can do that” and everyone will give you as much help as possible. Sometimes it takes time to learn your role and by contributing and participating you gain confidence and knowledge about all things Inner Wheel. Attend District meetings if possible, they are fun and full of friendship and fellowship.
Your National Governing body has strong leadership and we are looking at strategies to assist and enable clubs to grow and strengthen. Make your club meetings so enjoyable other people want to come. Talk about what you are doing and how you are helping your communities.
Inner Wheel New Zealand Inc is proudly supporting Look Good Feel Better as a National project and we had a special launch in Hamilton at the National changeover. There is information on the back of the Inner Link and the National Directory.
The 2017-2018 theme from International Inner Wheel President, Kapila Gupta from India, is
“Leave a Lasting Legacy” I treasure this theme as I think about all the wonderful ladies in Inner Wheel, in the past and present, and the legacy you are leaving for your family and Inner Wheel members to follow. Stay strong and involved and offer friendship to as many new people as possible.
