UNICEF Education for Girls
In 2006, at the Christchurch Convention, it was agreed that the next
International Social Project would be UNICEF Girls’ Education. Nothing has as
remarkable an impact on children and young people as a good education. It
enables them to make genuine choices over the kind of lives that they wish to
lead and ultimately opens doors which would otherwise probably remain closed.
For more than 130 million 6-11 year old children, almost 60% of which are girls, the doors remain firmly shut, as their fundamental human right to education is denied. By the age of 18, girls have received on average 4.5 years less education than boys.
Denying girls their right to a quality education effectively denies them of
their fundamental human rights and diminishes the chances of their children,
particularly daughters, of developing to their full potential.
Update
IWNZ members this past year have been generous in their donations to our UNICEF project ‘Education for Girls’ and our donations have been matched with a 4 for 1 grant which is amazing. We were fortunate to have Belinda Gorman a field officer with UNICEF speak to us at the Conference in Whangarei and tell us about the project that our money is being used for – ‘Wells in Laos’. The women and girls in the villages spend a good proportion of their day carting water to their villages and therefore the girls do not have time to attend school. By building wells in their villages this frees them up to have time to attend school as well as look after their own personal hygiene. This is a very worthwhile project and it was wonderful to hear first hand how our money was being used.
Please send your donations to your District Treasurer who will forward it on to National Treasurer Dianne.
New Generation Clubs
A highlight of the
2007-2008 Inner Wheel year was the chartering of our first New Generation
Club in March – The Inner Wheel Club of Aotea Auckland. Those who attended
the National Conference in Whangarei were impressed with the presentation
that Charter President Julie Garlick gave and an insight into how they are
running their Club.
The Ascot Park Hotel in Invercargill will be the venue for the 10th
IWNZ Biennial National Conference which will celebrate 20 years of our National
Council. Many of you will have seen the presentation by the members of NZ298
inviting you to ‘A Birthday Blast’ I encourage you all to start making plans
for what will be a memorable Conference.
We have just received news that Christchurch has a new Club who are in the
process of forming and hopefully will charter later this year.
Hazel Hunter of the IW Club of Auckland East who was instrumental in
starting the IW Club of Aotea Auckland has written a paper on the process
she followed in forming the Club and the Power Point Presentation and
various letters that were used. If any Club or District would like a copy of
this please contact either Hazel Hunter at hazelmhunter@hotmail.com or
President Annabelle at annabelle.valentine@xtra.co.nz
